1. Description of Our Community
Assumption College Thonburi(ACT) is one of the schools managed by the Catholic Brothers of the St. Gabriel Foundation of Thailand. It is located in the outskirt area of Thonburi District in Metropolitan Bangkok. A well-established education institution in Bangkok, Thailand, it has a population of more than 5,000 students which range from Grade 1 to Grade 12.
At ACT, each student is taught to become effective communicators, complex thinkers, self-directed learners, team players, caring global citizens, and technology-proficient individuals who are ready to face the challenges of the ever-changing landscape of our global society. Here, we believe that learning is a social responsibility and that education is a preparation for life. We further believe that understanding, caring, and a critical appreciation of ideas are among the qualities needed to succeed in the global society.
Nationalism and civic-mindedness are also developed among the students at ACT. Students here are taught to become more aware of the community where they live and be caring of the resources that they have. Conservation and social responsibility are done school-wide to make sure that the students will fully understand that everything that is too much is not good at all and that they need to become responsible of their own actions and become mindful in using their resources. Environmental awareness is one of the concerns that we answer at school. Students from Grade 1 to Grade 12 do whatever they could in order to take care of our natural resources and preserve the beauty of our natural surroundings.
2. Summary of Our Project
Our world has recently experienced several blows due to the changing climate. A number of cities in the world have been listed as dangerous cities to live in because of heavy pollution and traffic congestion as a result of rapid industrialization. Bangkok is one of those cities which have been experiencing pollution and other environmental problems caused by human activities. Save Bangkok, Save Earth is a study on the current environmental issues in Bangkok. Through this research activity, we gather information on the metamorphic deterioration of Bangkok’s environment with a hope that they would help us understand our environment and the impact of human activities to the ecosystem. We believe that if human beings were able to create environmental problems, we will also be capable of solving the dilemmas we brought to nature. The solution is a collaborative impact that needs to be done by every individual around in every corner of the world. Saving Bangkok is a big task and saving Earth is another bigger task. However, we’re not talking about starting huge projects in order to accomplish huge tasks but we’re talking about collectively doing small deeds that would contribute in the preservation of Bangkok’s beauty and ultimately the Earth’s.

4. Problems We Had To Overcome
The notice of this International CyberFair Contest came to us late and with our strong belief that with our prior learning experiences we could meet the deadlines that we need to set for the completion of the project, we never hesitated to join this year’s CyberFair with a hope that we would learn more from it. With the shorter time that we had, we encountered and solved a couple of problems as we went along. As each member of our team had respective activities to attend, it’s been difficult for us to work together most of the times and set time and place for virtual meetings. However, we were able to solve such problem by dividing the tasks that we had and by utilizing technology for online meetings and discussions. We just set group meetings at school when we needed to work on a particular research and observation in our community’s environment.
5. Our Project Sound Bite
Save Bangkok, Save Earth has been collaborative project which helped us understand better different theories and concepts by applying them in our community. This CyberFair project provided us an avenue to become investigators, innovators and presenters of new ideas which helped us improve our skills.
6. How did your activities and research for this CyberFair Project support standards, required coursework and curriculum standards?
This project is really an authentic activity which supports a variety of learning standards in our school. In this project, we have integrated our Expected School-Wide Learning Results(ESLRs) which are: effective communicators, complex thinkers, caring global citizens, team players and technology-proficient individuals. None of the ESLRs has been spared in the making of this project.
As learners of English as Second Language, this project has also provided us exposure in our ability to use the English Language in both oral and written communications and enhanced our ability to relate our first language to English.
